Harry Potter

Harry Potter is a popular fictional fantasy series written by J.K Rowling. There have been 7 books in the series with Harry Potter – a young wizard - as the lead character in the series. The Harry Potter series takes readers on a journey of the young wizard’s wild and spirited adventures at Hogwarts (the School of Wizardry and Witchcraft), along with his friends Ronald and Hermione. The series is about Harry’s conquest to overcome the Dark wizard Lord Voldemort. The entire series has sold between 400-450 million copies and that was in 2013 and is also available in 73 different languages.  There are several qualities that allow the series to be appealing to both young and adult audiences alike. While some people do not believe these books to be appropriate for children, I believe they have artistic value  and encourage children to be creative and imaginative.

There are 7 books in the series:  HP and the Philosopher’s Stone, HP and the Half-Blood Prince, HP and the Goblet of Fire, HP and the Chamber of Secrets HP and the Order of the Phoenix, HP and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and HP and the Deathly Hallows.

The Harry Potter series has many genres mixed in so that the stories appeal to children but also to adults.  The fantasy and adventure sides of the series allows children to use their imaginations and think bold and creative thoughts, while the thriller and romance qualities of the stories appeals to a more adult audience. While some may criticize the series for being dark and discussing taboo subject matters such as magic and witchcraft, the 450 million fans worldwide tend to overlook those criticisms. With deep themes such as death and immortality, many critics feel as though these books are not appropriate for young children.  But the books also convey Harry and his friends’ adolescence and children feel as they are growing up right along with them.

Harry Potter discovers at the age of eleven that he is a wizard, which allows children to be drawn into the magic side of the story. It lets children imagine being a wizard and creates a whole new world for them in their minds.  It also teaches children to learn to overcome adversities and to be themselves because in the long run it pays off. The Harry Potter series is a wonderful series for children as it allows them to be creative and to learn to think for themselves. It takes them on a journey and that is what being a kid is all about.
